In this work, I use spectroscopic and microscopic methods to elucidate the formation of coke deposits on solid catalysts used in the processing of biomass pyrolysis oil to obtain chemicals and fuels. Both the liquid-phase as the solid-phase are researched, thereby varying the reaction conditions and determining how the composition of the biomass pyrolysis oil changes, but also how the solid catalysts is covered by different type of coke molecules, including impurities present in the biomass-derived pyrolysis oil.
