Bert Weckhuysen received an honorary doctorate from Ghent University


On 22 March 2024, Bert Weckhuysen received an honorary doctorate (“Doctor Honoris Causa”) from Ghent University for his groundbreaking contributions to develop structure-performance relationships in the field of catalysis by making use of innovative in-situ and operando spectroscopy tools. His research outcomes are major in the path towards the realization of a more sustainable and ultimately a circular society.

Bert received his honorary doctorate diploma and medal from prof. Rik Van de Walle, the rector of Ghent University, and prof. Kevin Van Geem and prof. Veronique Van Speybroeck, the promotors, accompanied Bert in the official ceremony.

Utrecht University was represented by prof. Anton Pijpers, president of the executive board (“voorzitter van het college van bestuur”), while the Country of the Netherlands was represented by the Chef de Poste of the Dutch Embassy in Brussels, Max Valstar.

Before receiving the honorary doctorate, Bert gave a public lecture entitled ‘Towards a More Sustainable and Circular Society: Dreams Become Reality with Chemistry and Catalysis’.
