Heterogeneous Ziegler−Natta (Z-N) catalysts are among the most applied and versatile catalysts for polyolefin production and thus have great impact not only in science but also in everyday life. Due to the extraordinary complexity of their chemical composition (e.g. TiCl3-Al(C2H5)3/MgCl2), the real active sites of Z-N catalysts which take only too small a fraction of detected species are largely unclear. In this context, the aim of this project is to try to demystify the genesis of their catalytically active sites during early stages of ethylene polymerization by performing multiscale ex-situ and in-situ spectro-microscopic studies on model and industrial Z-N catalysts.
