My project proposes to address issues of insufficient CO2 utilization by designing a catalyst for the hydrogenation of CO2 to produce commodity chemicals. The work will involve designing bifunctional catalysts, consisting of metal nanoparticles on zeolite-based supports. The metal nanoparticle part of the system will allow for activation of CO2 into platform molecules; the zeolite support will be designed with known methanol-to-hydrocarbon and methane dehydroaromatisation catalysts in mind to activate platform molecules into more useful chemical building blocks. Microscopy and operando-spectroscopy will be used to understand how the reaction takes place, enabling intelligent design and tuning of the catalyst system.
